Ketchikan is located at on Revillagigedo Island. This amazing Alaskan city is just north of Prince Rupert, British Columbia and over 200 miles south of Juneau.

Originally established as a fishing camp, Ketchikan now is a tourist haven. The Ketchikan Airport is located offshore on Garvina Island. It is a short ferry ride from the airport across the calm Tongass Narrows to the city. On some summer days, there are as many as 6 large cruise ships in the harbor.

The Ketchikan Creek runs through the town and is also the source of its name. Ketchikan boasts the world’s largest collection of totem poles. Three locations feature these amazing works of art: Saxman Village, Totem Bight, and the Totem Heritage Center.

Ketchikan receives the heaviest average rainfall in North America. In fact, measurements are in feet, not inches due to the amount that falls each year. The town is the fourth wettest spot on earth. It receives over 16 feet of rain each year. Due to the amount of rain, much of the town sits over water, supported by piles.

Ketchikan, situated almost five hundred miles north of Seattle, is Alaska’s “first city.” This amazing city is usually the first stop for cruise ships. The historic downtown area is filled with numerous tourists during the summer months. The amazing Creek Street boardwalk gives the town a truly amazing historic feel.

Many tourists visit the souvenir shops then take a tour of the amazing city. Ketchikan is built directly into the steep hillside and most is propped on wooden pilings. Truly stunning totem poles are placed throughout the city.

Ketchikan known as the “Salmon Capital of the World.” Sport fishermen consider this area a paradise and thousands trek to the area each summer.
