Fairbanks is located on both shores of the Chena River. Fairbanks is only 45 minutes from Anchorage by air. Many travelers tend to fly the 3 hours from Seattle to reach this amazing city.
Fairbanks is subject to some of the widest temperature variations of any major city. In the summer temperatures can reach 90 degrees. Winter temperatures can reach lows below -50. The El Dorado Gold Mine is located just outside of Fairbanks. This two-hour tour of gold mining history features a train ride into a permafrost tunnel. The tour is capped off with panning for actual gold.
The Riverboat Discovery is a three and a half hour tour along the Chena River. The tour features an hour long stop at the Chena Indian Village and a stop at an Athabascan fishing village.
The Fairbanks City Tour is features a tour of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, the University of Alaska Fairbanks Museum and the amazing year-round Botanical Gardens.
Fairbanks is home to a wide range of events throughout the year.
The Midnight Sun Baseball Game on Summer Solstice starts at 10:30 p.m. and is played in sunshine throughout the night.
Fairbanks Golden Days is the celebration the discovery of gold in the area. Fairbanks Golden Days are at the end of July and highlighted by a parade through the city. The parade features bands, antique cars, and floats.
The Yukon Quest dog race is held in March and features a course throughout the city. March also features an international ice carving competition.
Fairbanks may be reached by air, land or sea. It is easily reached from any of the highways in the area and is a common stop on trips throughout Alaska.
