With roughly 1,000 people living there full-time, the city of Delta Junction is a small capsule of small town atmosphere surrounded by breathtaking beauty.
Surrounded by 3 mountain ranges on the north, southeast and southwest, the Delta River borders it to the west, providing the name for this unique town. This town is filled with limitless scenic beauty and a history that is sure to excite you as well.
During World War II, the city of Delta Junction became an important military point. Here, the Allen Army Airfield was built to help ship supplies to Russia. The airstrip was known to have some difficulties landing due to the large number of buffalo walking over the runways, a perfect example of how abundant wildlife is here.
Fort Greely is now at Delta Junction, providing an additional influx of population for those training and operating with the Space and Missile Defense Command. Firms such as Boeing, Brown & Root and Bechtel have brought a number of individuals here working under government contracts.
The area around Delta Junction is resplendent in farming. In addition, the area farmers are known for producing a range of meats (from the Delta Meat & Sausage Co) including yak, elk and bison cuts.
Today, the Delta Junction is a wonderful place to visit. Typically sunny throughout the summertime, the Delta Junction does not receive a high amount of rainfall each year. On clear winter nights, you can see the aurora borealis sparkling through the night sky. The months of May to July have no night, but rather stay in a “dusk-like” state over the evening hours.
Delta Junction can be a windy spot & has been called “Little Chicago” by the soldiers stationed at Fort Greely. The wind whips up the Delta River, so it is something to plan for.
